The Insanity That Surrounds Me

Yesterday I got together with a friend for a few beers after work. It was not to celebrate St. Patrick's Day...in fact, when we made our plans I forgot that yesterday was the holiday. Rather, it seems we both wanted to sit down and get a respite from the insanity that surrounds us.

Naturally, part of the conversation involved politics. How can it not? Anyone who pays the least bit of attention to what's going on in the outside world can't help but hear about all things political. Living in Wisconsin, this is especially true. The goings-on in Wisconsin for the past month or so have not only made national news, but they have attracted protesters thugs from across the country. I do not use that term lightly. If you pay attention only to the MSM, you may not get the full picture of what's been going on. Oh sure - you see some bits and pieces, but even they are being reported with a left leaning slant. For the entire picture, one usually has to turn to alternative media - blogs and such. In this post, I published the despicable threatening email that was sent to Republican Senators.

One such blog has a very comprehensive timeline of what's been going on only this month, much of which you may not have heard about. Below are just a few examples.

March 17th, 2011: Threats against WI blogger and Madison Law Professor Ann Althouse:

WE WILL FUCK YOU UP. We will throw our baseballs in your lawn, you cranky oldpieces of shit, and then we will come get them back. What are you gonna do? Shootus? Get Wausau Tea Patriots to form an ad hoc militia on your front lawn? That wouldbe fucking HILAROUS to us. You could get to know the assholes on your side in realfucking life instead of sponging off the civil society we provide for you every single dayyou draw breath.

March 17th, 2011: WI Republican Senator’s property vandalized:

The office of Sen. Dan Kapanke (R-La Crosse) said the senator has been subjected to damage of personal property and has received threatening statements in the wake of mass protests in recent weeks over Gov. Scott Walker’s budget-repair bill.

According to Rose Smyrski of Kapanke’s staff:

Nails were scattered on his driveway twice last week. The incidents were reported to the La Crosse Police Department.

Also, Kapanke’s’s windshield was damaged on March 9 after the Senate voted on the budget-repair bill.

March 4th, 2011: Live ammunition found at WI Capitol:

Earlier Thursday, police reported finding dozens of rounds of live ammunition outside the Capitol.

Dane County deputies found 11 rounds near the State Street entrance Thursday morning, UW-Madison Police Chief Susan Riseling said. Twenty-nine rounds were found near the King Street entrance, and one round was found near the North Hamilton Street entrance, Riseling said.
And that's just a few. Check out some videos here.

So I ask you - what happened to the "call for civility" - is this the civil discourse the dems were pleading for? Where is the outrage for such heinous threats? And what, pray tell, would the reaction be if it were Republicans making such threats to Democrats? Would the police investigate? Would there be public outrage? I think the answer is obvious.

Insanity.

  1. I have said this before, I am disgusted by this and the threats that the left received when the health care debate was going on. As you surely know, both sides and the middle have people with issues.

    Great blog.

  2. While I agree that there are complete morons on both sides, I've never seen things such as this. I don't recall reading about anyone being stalked such as this http://theundergroundconservative.wordpress.com/2011/03/17/more-civility-from-lefty-thugs/ before. Perhaps I'm wrong about that and if so I'll admit it. But this is the worst I've seen.

Union thugs quite literally scaring people out of signing recall petitions? And the police did nary a thing to stop it.

Again, I'll be the first to admit disgusting tactics can come from either side, but this is the crap I'm surrounded by day in and day out for the time being.

  3. Worst? Come on....how man dems had bricks through their windows, how many death threats did they get...i dont really want to go research this and its not about wanting to win this discussion and I am no diminishing the seriousness of these threats, but no, I disagree, not the worse ever, maybe it just hits closer to home.

  4. I said it's the worst I'VE seen - not the worst there has been. And again, a question I asked is after the call for civility (after unjustifiably blaming the right, the TEA Party and so on) after the Tucson shooting, what would the public reaction be if this were the right doing it to the left?

For that matter, what would have been the reaction if Republican senators ran away from home to avoid a vote? Would they be the heroes that the Fugitive 14 have become?

My point is that, in my humble opinion, there is a distinct double standard.

  6. I write blog posts when the mood strikes. There have been many things going on even with the republicans that I haven't written about. Do you see many postings on the ongoing budget battle? Sure, there are a few, but there COULD have been many, many more.

Frankly, I'm sick and tired of the whole damned thing.

    Nice avatar, BTW! ;)

  7. I am unaware of threats from ACTUAL Conservatives. I have seen threats toward Dems that turn out not to be from Conservatives, but from fringe elements like LaRouchies or the neo-nazis and survivalists. The threats to Republicans come from mainstream rank and file Democrats. To claim otherwise is ludicrous and not provable.
